Unsung Moments in Library History: The Evolution of the Shush!
When you think of the word “shush” and its accompanying gesture of placing one finger across a pair of pursed lips, you probably most readily think of a stereotypical cranky gray haired librarian who resembles Miss Grundy from the Archie comic books! We really don’t know who originated the combination of the finger to lip gesture and the sibilant hissing noise that we all know as the “shush” sound. The person may or may not have been a librarian but he or she clearly wanted some peace and quiet. If he had a yard, he probably regularly ran outside to chase off neighborhood punks who had dared to cross his property line!
