“Not too long ago it was considered extremely square to wear white socks…After Thriller came out, it even became okay to wear your pants high around your ankles again.” Michael Jackson (1)
This week in 1983, Michael Jackson first appeared wearing a single glove, which later became an iconic style. The look was introduced on an NBC TV special called “Motown 25,” where Jackson reunited with the Jackson 5 before his solo performance of “Billie Jean.”
For his performance, he prepared a new dance move he was working on, the now-infamous Moonwalk, and decided on a standout outfit. His look consisted of short black pants with sparkly white socks, a sequined black jacket, a fedora, and a single white glove.
After “Motown 25,” the white glove continued to be part of Jackson’s look, but the very first glove was fastened from a golf glove covered in rhinestone mesh. Later versions of the glove were handmade, with 1,200 Austrian crystals sewn onto each one.
